With just an iPhone (tested on an iPhone 5 - would not try it on anything older), an app (GyroOSC) that transmits OSC (Open Source Control) data over wifi from the gyroscope and accelerometer in the iPhone to a program used by a lot of musicians called Osculator which routes the OSC data into a Cinema 4D plugin (FOSC) which with a little Xpresso magic, controls a C4D camera whose viewport is transmitted over USB back to the iPhone with another app (Duet Display). Stick your iPhone into your HMD (head mounted display) of choice (Google Cardboard, Homido (my fav so far), MergeVR, etc.) and look at the world you have created in Cinema 4D in all its 360 glory.

The reason I did not go full wireless is with today's phone and wifi systems, there's not enough bandwidth to stream the amount of data required for a good steady experience. This will definitely change in the next year or two.

This will be an ongoing project and any feedback on our YouTube site is welcome. Let us know if you come up with a better system. We're hoping to have an Android version soon.
